Slow play is a frustrating problem in golf but particularly so in tournaments and we want to minimize the amount of slow play during our events. If your group falls behind (loses sight) of the group in front of you, you have an obligation to speed up your play to catch up. Slow play is not necessarily related to playing skill. Low handicap players are often just as guilty of slow play as high handicap players. Playing ready and efficient golf can greatly speed up play. Below are some tips on playing faster. We want to encourage everyone to be considerate of the golfers behind you at all times and help reduce slow play.
Tee to green
- No honors on the tee (birdy shooters may be honored). First player ready...tee off.
- Hit provisional balls...any time you hit a ball that might be hard to find, hit a provisional ball so you don't have to return to the spot from which the ball was hit to hit another. Limit searching time to 5 minutes then move on using the provisional ball if the first ball is not found. Carry an extra ball in your pocket.
- Hit if you are ready and it is safe...if your ball is ahead of another player in your group and you are at your ball and ready to hit, go ahead and hit your ball if it appears that the player behind you is still approaching their ball and not prepared to hit. We don't have to strictly adhere to the rules of etiquette.
- Get ready for your shot while waiting for another player to hit...make club selection, determine alignment, take practice swings (if it does not disturb the player hitting). After the other player hits, you'll be ready to hit your shot.
- Limit practice swings! More practice swings don't help.
- Don't be a spectator in the cart! Cart mates should drop one player off at their ball and the other player should drive to their ball to prepare for their shot.
On and around the green
Remember that there are players behind you. If you are falling behind, please do what you need to do to catch up. We would like to avoid the need to assess penalties for excessive and chronic slow play.
- Survey the green as you approach it...when you are walking toward the green, be efficient with your movement. Take a route that enables you to walk around the green to survey the contour of the green before you get behind your ball.
- Be ready to putt when it is your turn to putt...when another player is putting and you know you will be next, line up your putt while they are putting. Just remember to be courteous and stand still while they are stroking their putt. When that player is finished putting, you should be already prepared to step up and stroke your putt.
- Putt out...after you have begun putting, continue putting until your ball is in the hole as long as you can do so without standing on another player's line. You don't have to rush but it saves lots of time by continuing rather than marking.
- Go to the next tee...the first two players that have finished putting should move on to the next tee and begin preparation for their tee shots on the next hole. Someone should be ready to tee off by the time the remaining players arrive at the tee.
- Record scores at the next tee...do not remain at the green to record scores.
